"Europeans Best Destination 2023" belongs to Warsaw here's how you can learn a bit of history and culture without spending a single Zloty.
When I first visited Warsaw back in 2019, I headed to the Wilanow Palace, it was my lucky day as I found out that there is no entrance fee to the park and palace on Thursdays. Later on, I learned that most of the museums in Warsaw have specific days that you can visit for free. Check below for the list of my top recommendations.
#1 Warsaw Rising Museum
The museum is dedicated to the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, during which the Polish resistance fought against Nazi Germany for 63 days. It focuses on the events that took place in August and September 1944. The museum connects the past and the present by organizing cultural, and educational activities and innovative exhibits within a place of remembrance.
The museum is located in the Wola district of Warsaw, entrance to the museum is free on Mondays. To get tickets, simply head to the museum's website and book them online.
#2 POLIN Museum of the History of the Polish Jews.
POLIN is definitely my favorite museum in Warsaw. An unusual museum in a unique location. One thousand years of history is told in a symbolic place in the center of Warsaw – in the pre-war district inhabited mainly by Jews, and during the war transformed by the Germans into a ghetto. The museum restores the memory of their rich culture and heritage in eight multimedia galleries. Be prepared to spend hours there, or visit on multiple occasions. Pro tip: The museum has an amazing restaurant that serves authentic Jewish dishes. Entry to the museum of free on Thursdays. To get tickets, book them in advance or get them at the ticket desk.
#3 Museum of Modern Art
If you're a fan of contemporary art, then the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw is a must-visit. Located in the heart of Warsaw, This museum on the Vistula offers free entry every day to its permanent collection, which includes works by Polish and international artists. To get tickets, simply walk up to the museum's entrance, and you're good to go. The museum offers a fun and vibrant atmosphere, and you'll be sure to find something that catches your eye.
#4 Fryderyk Chopin Museum
Note that the museum is closed for renovation until 23 April 2023. You are invited to visit his birthplace and park located at Żelazowa Wola, which remains open.
The Fryderyk Chopin Museum is a must-visit for any music lover. The museum is dedicated to the life and works of the famous Polish composer, Fryderyk Chopin. The Museum is responsible for the world’s largest collection of Chopin, an incredibly wide range of memorabilia linked to the composer’s life and work, numbering more than 7500 items.
There are music manuscripts, editions of Chopin’s works, his correspondence, historical and contemporary iconography, precious personal items, and also documents linked to biographical writings, criticism of his works and the broad reception of the composer and his oeuvre.
Free admission on Sundays. To get tickets, simply head to the museum's website and book them in advance.
#5 The National Museum in Warsaw
The National Museum in Warsaw is one of the largest museums in Poland and the largest in the capital. It comprises a rich collection of ancient art (Egyptian, Greek, Roman), counting about 11,000 pieces, an extensive gallery of Polish paintings since the 16th century, and a collection of foreign paintings including some paintings from Adolf Hitler's private collection ceded to the museum by the American authorities in post-war Germany.
This museum is located in the city center and offers free admission on Tuesdays. It houses a vast collection of Polish art, including works by famous painters such as Jan Matejko and Józef Chełmoński.
Free admission on Thursdays. No tickets are required for the permanent exhibitions located on the ground floor.
#6 The Royal Łazienki Museum
The Royal Lazienki Museum is a historic park and palace complex located in Warsaw, Poland. The Palace on the Isle is the main attraction of the complex and is considered one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in Poland. It was built in the 18th century for King Stanisław August Poniatowski and features a collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. The palace also houses the King Stanisław August Poniatowski Museum, which showcases the history and culture of Poland during the late 18th century.
The Royal Lazienki Museum is a popular tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for its scenic beauty and rich history and is considered one of the most important cultural sites in Poland.
Admission to the museum is free on Fridays. Online reservations cannot be made.
#7 The Royal Castle in Warsaw
While entry to the castle's permanent collection is free on Wednesdays, a separate ticket is required to see the castle's chambers and apartments. However, the castle's permanent collection is still worth a visit, as it houses a range of art, furniture, and decorative objects that showcase Poland's royal history. Currently Herman Hans Allegrories and Rembrandts the Girl In the Frame and The Scholar with A Pen. The castle is located in the Old Town of Warsaw and offers a breathtaking view of the city from its rooftop terrace.
For many of the free museums in Warsaw, tickets can often be obtained at the front desk. It's always a good idea to check the museum's website beforehand to confirm any specific booking requirements or to check for any potential changes in opening hours or free admission days.
